Vision plays a huge role in childhood development. Most children are visual learners, which means they understand things best through visual demonstrations. This is why being proactive about your child’s visual health should always be a priority.
One good place to start is by being familiar with telltale signs of eyesight problems in kids. Read on as Dr. Robert Gerowitz, Optometrist PC, your corneal refractive therapy specialist, discusses four common red flags.
1. Increased Light Sensitivity
Also known as photophobia, this problem stems from ocular infections or corneal abrasions. Your child may experience nausea and headaches whenever they are exposed to spotlights, camera flashes or even sunlight. They may avoid playing outdoors during the day or having their picture taken.
2. Sitting Too Close to the TV
This may indicate that your child is struggling to see things clearly from afar, the hallmark symptom of myopia (nearsightedness). You may also notice that your child dislikes playing outdoor games like catch, which requires sharp distant-range vision. We will perform a comprehensive eye exam to check for any vision problems. We offer a range of effective corrective eyewear options that can improve your child’s vision and overall quality of life, including contact lenses, eyeglasses and ortho k molds.
3. Frequent Head Tilting
Binocular vision disorders are often harder to spot than refractive errors, but can cause serious visual and behavioral problems in children. If you notice your child frequently tilting their head to the side or covering one eye when looking at things, this could be a sign of a binocular vision problem. The best thing you can do is to bring them to your trusted eye doctor for an eye exam.
4. Reduced Attention Span
If your child has an undiagnosed vision problem, the frustration of not being able to see clearly can manifest in many different ways. Your child may experience headaches, eye strain, trouble focusing in school and irritability, among other symptoms. If you notice these signs, bring your child to your reliable eye care center as soon as possible. We’ll perform an eye exam to check for any signs of underlying eye conditions.
